Māori new year in variety of ways
Matariki is being celebrated at schools throughout South Canterbury, with one dedicating an entire day to honour the occasion.
On Friday, New Zealand will celebrate its first indigenous holiday – Matariki, new year on the Māori lunar calendar.
With the day a public holiday, many schools throughout the region have chosen to mark Matariki in the lead up to the day off.
At Waimataitai School, principal Jonathon Young said the school had decided to dedicate all of Wednesday to Matariki events.
