achieving equity for Māori
It’s hoped the number of Māori students studying science subjects at a Manawatū school may double through a new partnership with a Māori-focused education programme.
Pūhoro Stemm Academy and Awatapu College in Palmerston North signed a multi-year agreement, the first time it had done so.
The academy works with young Māori students to increase Māori engagement in science, technology, engineering, maths and mātauranga - Māori knowledge - subjects (stemm).
Pūhoro chief executive Naomi Manu said Pūhoro worked with 54 schools nationwide on one-year deals, but because the programme had become more sustainable through Ministry of Education funding, it was able to offer a longer-term partnership with Awatapu, which had been an exemplary partner.
